CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Whether it's to get a job or help siblings with online school, low-income and minority high schoolers are delaying their college applications.
Casey Near, executive director of counseling at Collegewise, told WBBM there are several factors at play, the biggest of which is the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
“We were in a pandemic, and it was really, really tough for a lot of kids to just finish the to-dos of applying to college,” Near said.
FAFSA applications are down about 9%.
But Near said there's still time to apply.
“If you just go on to commonapp.org you can actually search and filter by any school that has a deadline after today. And there are still hundreds of schools that are taking applications,” she continued.
