(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A group of parents in the northern suburbs has offered to provide a panel of doctors to help the school district reopen Evanston Township High School.
The Coalition to Reopen Evanston Schools says ETHS is unique in that it is one of a handful of suburban Cook County high schools that is conducting all classes remotely.
ETHS District 202 officials have opened the school building to sports, extracurricular activities, and to students who need a quiet place for remote learning.
Dr. Sarah Lovenger, an ETHS parent, says COVID-19 rates are dropping in Cook County and Evanston.
"We look at the numbers. We know things look great in Cook County. They look great in Evanston. Illinois is doing well, so we can safely open schools. We can bring teens back to the classroom," she said.
She added that remote learning is having an impact on students’ academic performance and mental health. She believes that even two months more of remote learning would have a profound psychological impact.
The district has said it is monitoring regional health metrics, and will give parents 30 days’ notice about a switch to hybrid learning.
