NORMAL, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Books that have been removed from some school libraries across the country were the topic of debate last night during a school board meeting in downstate Normal.

The books "Gender Queer" and "Lawn Boy" have some parents pretty upset including Mary Carlisle.

"On top of the racist critical race theory and diversity, equity, inclusion and the garbage that is social emotional learning, we now have pornography available in the school libraries. The very idea that the adult teachers who the parents entrust with their children for the school day, would make pornography available to them is disgusting and unacceptable," Carlisle said.

The school superintendent Dr. Kristen Weikle, said students can choose what they want to read.

"Books that are available to individual students from the schools' IMCs are not required reading. They are optional. Students elect them," Weikle said.

A number of people spoke in support of keeping the books on the shelves. Opposition has been fueled by social media.
