CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Supporters of a former Catholic church in the Pilsen neighborhood are keeping the faith that a beloved statue will remain in the building.

The former St. Adalbert Church is no longer considered a sacred space by the Archdiocese of Chicago, which wants to move a replica of Michelangelo’s La Pieta to another church in the area.

Former parishioners have been staging a prayer vigil for 40 days and work crews were turned away again Tuesday, because the archdiocese failed to get the proper permits. Mary Lu Seidel of Preservation Chicago spoke to CBS 2.

"For more than 40 days, the archdiocese has been directed to get the right permits and they still haven’t so, it’s really mind-boggling to me that they still came today, yet again, without the proper permits to do the work they were there to do."

St. Adalbert’s closed in 2019.
