CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When some Chicago Park District pools reopen later this month, others will be closing.
Indoor pools that have already been open are closing, because of the lifeguard shortage and the need to staff outdoor pools and beaches.
Outdoor pools are set to reopen June 25.
According to Chicago Park District spokeswoman Michele Lemons, they still need another to 250 trained lifeguards in order to have all pools open. The Park District is expecting to reopen the job listing, which was closed to new applicants on Memorial Day weekend.
Meanwhile, according to Crain's, the Chicago Park District has also decided that drinking fountains at its facilities will remain shut off. Lemons said that’s due to “guidance” from city, state and federal health officials
However, Phase 5 reopening guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health state drinking fountains can be turned on; though the CDC recommends at least daily cleaning of high-touch surfaces.
