(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Hundreds of Chicago Park District workers are threating to walk off the job if city leaders don’t intervene in contract negotiations.

With rain pouring down outside of City Hall, members of SEIU Local 73 made their message loud and clear.

President Dian Palmer says if Mayor Johnson fails to step in, members are not afraid to strike. The union has asked the Park District for pay increases, more monthly positions and insurance for all workers.

“These workers are from Chicago, they care about Chicago, they care about Chicago citizens. They’ve gone on to get an education and they could work anywhere, but they chose to work in the parks. The city has to do right by these workers,” Palmer said.

She noted that workers voted to strike in 2019, but a walkout was averted.
