(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dozens of cats and dogs rescued from the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in Florida are getting help from a Chicago animal shelter to find new homes.

Susanna Wickham, CEO of PAWS Chicago, says her organization sent three vehicles to Florida to bring back 54 dogs and cats from shelters that have faced hardships following the historic hurricane.

She says her group hopes to find new homes in the Chicago area for these animals quickly.

PAWS Chicago also needs people willing to provide foster homes for some of the animals, until they can be adopted, she said.

This will be just the first wave of animals coming to Chicago from areas hit by Hurricane Ian, Wickham said. Shelters in Florida are expected to get more dogs and cats.
