(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The last surviving piping plover chick was spotted back at Montrose Beach Wednesday.
It was first thought that baby Nagamo had flown south for the winter on August 8, but then the chick returned to Montrose Beach a few days later, left again for Racine, Wisconsin, and is now back, preparing for its journey south.
Experts say it's not uncommon for piping plover chicks to wander before migrating.
Nagamo is the only chick that survived from four eggs that hatched in June.
Nagamo’s parents, Imani and Sea Rocket, have already left the beach to head south for the winter.
