CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police are investigating the shooting deaths of two children over the weekend on the city’s West Side and in the south suburbs.
According to Chicago police, a 14-year-old boy was shot around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night in the parking lot of an Aldi grocery at Madison and Springfield on Chicago's West Side.
The teen, identified as Eddie Thigpen, had been shot in the abdomen, and was unable to talk to police when they arrived on the scene, because of the severity of his injuries.
He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he died.
No suspects are in custody. Area Four detectives are investigating.
Meanwhile, information has been hard to come by since it was revealed Sunday that a 12-year-old girl was shot to death in south suburban Hazel Crest over the weekend.
The 12-year-old girl, identified as Erica Gibson, was from the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side and was fatally shot Saturday night in a home on 176th and Arlington Lane in south suburban Hazel Crest.
Police have not yet said anything about the circumstances of the shooting.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has labeled Erica Gibson’s death a homicide.
A neighbor told CBS 2 it was a very unusual sight in the normally quiet neighborhood with lots of police showing up to the home.
“I thought it must have been something serious that happened, because there were so many it was unmarked cars as well – sitting out with the marked cars,” said the neighbor, who did not want to be identified.
