CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Police at the University of Chicago have issued a safety alert after an attempted armed robbery Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators said as a University of Chicago staff member was on a sidewalk in the 1400 block of East Midway Plaisance, someone with a handgun approached the staff member from behind.
University of Chicago police said the person with the gun demanded property from the staff member, who refused to hand anything over.
The armed person then fled eastbound on foot, according to investigators.
There were no reports of injuries. University police has some safety tips for students and staff members:
-Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
-Do not resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary.
-Avoid using cell phones or other electronic devices while on the street.
-When walking, try to walk with a group or have a friend walk with you as there is safety in numbers.
