(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago's police and fire departments gave out their top awards for exceptional bravery on Wednesday. Just don't call the recipients ''heroes'' -- to their faces, anyway.

The city hasn't held the once-annual award ceremony since the COVID pandemic. But Mayor Johnson was there for the revival, as was his police superintendent, Larry Snelling.

Police Tactical Officer Ravyn Morgan and her partner, Jake Schmeisser, confronted, shot and apprehended a man terrorizing his neighbors with a shotgun and a revolver after they tried to de-escalate the situation.

She and Schmeisser insisted their training prevailed that day.

“They prepare us for situations like this. You never really know when it’s going to happen. But when it does, and the training just kicks in like second nature, you can only be thankful because of that,” Morgan said.

The other award went to three firefighters who dramatically rescued two infants from a smoky fire in December 2022.
