CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — John Catanzara, the president of Chicago Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), said he’s a fan of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s choice for police superintendent.

Catanzara mentioned Chicago Police Counterterrorism Chief Larry Snelling in a video message to FOP members.

“Congratulations to Chief Larry Snelling on his recommendation to be the new superintendent,” he said. “Hopefully, City Council does the right thing [on] Sept. 13. We can start a new chapter with somebody who understands the men and women of this department, what they need, what’s important and help boost morale.”

He said the Interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller has done that in his short time in that role. The union boss added that he hopes to see the momentum carry forward and the department get back on the right track.

Catanzara also noted the death of a 3-year-old migrant on a bus headed to Chicago that’s under investigation by the CDC.

Another example, he said, that highlights the seriousness of the exposure that police officers are subjected to every day.
