CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Fraternal Order of Police wants to pull nearly two dozen disciplinary cases against officers from the Chicago Police Board and have them decided outside of public view.

The move would be a serious setback for police accountability, the president of the Police Board said. The request from FOP lodge 7 comes shortly after an arbitrator ruled officers facing serious discipline should get to choose who decides their fate - the nine-member board or an outside third party.

Board President Ghian Foreman told the Chicago Tribune such a move would drive cases behind closed doors at a time when it’s never been more important to raise public confidence in the misconduct allegation process. The union is in contract negotiations with the city and the City Council must approve the arbitrator’s decision.
