CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — PJM interconnection, a power grid operator that serves northern Illinois and several other eastern states, said increased demand will run into reduced capacity to generate electricity.
As a result, the company said electricity customers in the Chicago area could face shortages in the future.
Crain's Chicago Business quoted a February 24 report, which singled out Illinois’ clean energy bill that was signed into law in 2021.
The company estimated the legislation will take several power plants’ worth of production offline by 2030, and the report's authors doubted the state will meet goals to replace old fossil fuel generation with renewable energy sources.
ComEd said it can handle the region's electricity needs through 2030, but the utility did warn reliability could be a problem if growth takes off faster than expected.
