CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said her government is ready to assist Chicago as new migrants arrive from Texas, and she is lashing out at the Texas Governor too.

Board President Toni Preckwinkle said the county and its health and hospitals system is providing health screenings and care for the more than 100 migrants whom Texas Governor Greg Abbott shipped to Chicago with no official warning or coordination. She called his behavior disgraceful.

“This is part of his effort to gain sort of I think national attention and to cater to Trump supporters who are hostile to immigration, and he’s using these poor folks as pawns in that larger game, which is despicable,” Preckwinkle said.

After the first wave of migrants arrived in Chicago by bus from Texas, Mayor Lori Lightfoot thanked and praised the head of the Cook Country Board for helping handle the influx on short notice. But, what if the migrants keep coming?

“We’re looking for resources to try to be of assistance to the city and of course to serve those who end up in suburban Cook (County).

“We’ve always served whoever came to our door, regardless of their gender or their insurance status or their sexual orientation or their ethnicity or whatever, and we will continue to do that,” Preckwinkle said.

Texas Gov. Abbott also has been busing migrants to New York City and Washington, D.C.
