Ahead of the Chicago Pride Parade on Sunday, Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot made a call to arms for democrats to get registered to vote and educate themselves after a big loss in the Supreme Court last week.
Lightfoot called the Supreme Court “right-wing,” and said it has delegitimized itself by overturning Roe v. Wade.
“Clarence Thomas — you’ve got to at least give him his honesty — he’s coming for us,” Lightfoot said. “There’s no question whatsoever.”
Pritzker said he’s both celebrating and protesting during the Pride parade.
“Marching for Pride, marching for LGBTQ rights, for choice, and for making sure that we’re fighting back against the Supreme Court that’s taking away people’s rights,” Pritzker said.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth was also in attendance, and the senator said she’s worried about what the high will do next.
"IVF may be in jeopardy. Access to any type of healthcare that involves a fertilized egg could be a real issue for people," Duckworth said. "It’s devastating that the Supreme Court made this decision, but it’s what republicans have been after for this entire time.”
Both Pritzker and Lightfoot talked about making Chicago and the state a beacon of hope for women seeking abortions and members of the LGBTQ community.
“They can do their business. They can make sure that their employees are supported, but they don’t have to worry about being in the middle of a firestorm of culture wars spurred by the right wing in this country,” Lightfoot said. “Come to Chicago. We believe in justice for all.”
