(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Gov. JB Pritzker on Monday defended his decision to reduce the amount of money the state will spend on health care for immigrants.

Beginning Saturday, the state will cap the number of seniors who can enroll for health care, and it will suspend enrollments for people aged 42 to 64.

Advocates for immigrants have criticized the move, but Pritzker said the state cannot spend money that it doesn't have. The Democratic governor did urge as many eligible people as possible to sign up for coverage by July 1.

He also agreed that preventive health care is important to avoid larger medical expenses.

Pritzker said he, members of the Illinois Congressional delegation and others are working to find solutions.
