
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — So-called “ghost guns” are now banned in Illinois, after Gov. JB Pritzker signed a measure into law Wednesday.
Ghost guns are privately made or assembled firearms that do no have serial numbers. They can come from kits or be made with 3D printing technology.
“A child should not be able to build an AR-15 like they’re building a toy truck,” Pritkzer said at a bill signing ceremony at St. Sabina Parish on the South Side. “A convicted domestic abuser should not be able to evade scrutiny by using a 3D printer to make a gun.”
Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said ghost guns are the fasted-growing subset of firearms seized by his officers.
He said CPD seized more than 11,000 guns in 2020 and more than 12,000 last year. .
Illinois is the first state in the Midwest to ban ghost guns.
