(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart has expanded a program called Tails of Redemption, which has jail detainees training dogs from area shelters to help both the dogs and the detainees.

“It’s life-changing for these detainees, and they’ll be the first to tell you it teaches them about compassion, it teaches them about patience,” Darts told reporters Thursday.

Among the detainees in the program is Pedro Hernandez, who said he hopes to use the skills he has learned when he leaves.

Dart said the sheriff’s office is one of two police agencies in the country certified to train therapy dogs. He noted they’re saving dogs from being euthanized, and about 100 have been adopted.
