Proposed 'hybrid' Chicago school board being introduced as compromise

Illinois State Capitol building

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago would have partially-elected school board under legislation being introduced in Springfield.

Senate Majority Leader Kim Lightford (D-Maywood) is proposing a "hybrid" board of education - partially elected by the public and partially appointed - a compromise proposal to dilute, but not eliminate, Mayor Lori Lightfoot's power to appoint the board members, Crain's Chicago Business reported.

Details are still being worked out, and Lightford said she's introducing the language at the Mayor's request, as an alternative to teacher's union-backed legislation that would create a fully elected school board, which has been gaining momentum.

Lightford, in a phone interview with Crain's, said her intent is not to totally satisfy either Chicago City Council or the Chicago Teachers Union, but rather to come up with a bill that helps schools.
