CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to give former Chicago Alderman Ed Burke ten years in prison for his corruption conviction when he’s sentenced in two weeks.
In arguing for a decade behind bars, prosecutors said Ed Burke used his significant political power to solicit bribes and work for his private law firm and continues to deny he did anything wrong.
Meanwhile, defense attorneys for the longest-serving alderman filed letters of support for Burke from the likes of former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb and former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.
The defense team is asking for no prison time, saying the 80-year-old is in the twilight of his life and has given so much of himself for so many years.
Monday night’s filings come ahead of the June 24 sentencing by federal Judge Virginia Kendall. Burke was convicted of racketeering, bribery and attempted extortion.
