CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Another summer tradition returned to the water Saturday as the Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac sailboat race got underway on Lake Michigan.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of last year's sailboat race from Navy Pier to Mackinac Island in northern Michigan but 240 boats will make the journey this year.

Mack race veteran Keith Krause of Park Ridge told WBBM Newsradio the fastest boats could arrive Sunday night while others could complete the journey as late as Tuesday. But he said race times depend on nature.

“Wind conditions, sea state, crew experience, things of that nature, weigh largely upon how long it takes to finish,” Krause said.

Krause said he has one goal this time around.

“Our boat was fortunate enough in 2007 to win the Mackinac Cup Trophy overall. So we summited Mount Everest already. All we want to do is do it again,” Krause said.

The Mac race began in 1898 with just five boats.
