(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gov. JB Pritzker on Monday signed a bill into law that aims to correct racial inequity in education in Illinois.

The legislation was written by the state’s Legislative Black Caucus.

Among those at the signing: the state’s first African-American Speaker of the House, Chris Welch.

“These changes move us a little bit closer to our goal of advancing racial equity,” he said.

Questions remain, such as how to pay for the components, such as expanding early childhood education.

“Educating a child is more than just where the resources is going to come from,” Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford said. “We have 23 provisions in this act — 23 — that will change the way the platform of a child goes from preschool all the way through higher education.”

Another aim of the new act is to increase the number of minority teachers. High schools will have to offer two years of foreign language.
