CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Former Mayor Rahm Emanuel could wind up serving in the administration of another Democratic president.

Rahm Emanuel reportedly is under serious consideration to become the head of the U.S. Transportation Department. When talk first began, progressives opposed it, especially because of the way Emanuel handled the police killing of teenager Laquan McDonald.

But Axios reported Emanuel’s name continues to be high on President-elect Joe Biden’s list.

According to former Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, the DOT will be taking on added importance in a Biden administration as the department handles spending on major infrastructure projects and the roll-out of drone-delivery programs.

“You're talking about 20–25 percent of the economy,” former Secretary Ray LaHood said.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told the New York Times that Emanuel would be a "divisive pick."

In addition to Emanuel, sources tell Axios that contenders include LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg — though each of them also could land elsewhere in his administration.
