CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - While many of us will be shelling out thousands of dollars in property tax payments next week, the Cook County Treasurer’s Office is sending back some cash.

Treasurer Maria Pappas says the owners of more than 10,000 properties across Cook County will be sharing $22 million that her office is sending out in overpayments.

The refunds are automatic, as part of a program her office began several years ago. They are for those who should have received exemptions for being homeowners, seniors or disabled.

Her office says most recipients will not have to do any paperwork. Over half should get the refunds directly deposited in their bank accounts while the others will receive paper checks in the mail by Aug. 9.

Taxes jumped a record nearly 20 percent this year for the median bill in the south and southwest suburbs.

Second Installments of the 2023 bills are due Aug. 1.
