CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --The Chicago School Board will consider a resolution calling on Chicago Public School leadership to remove police officers from schools.
A resolution that's on the agenda for Thursday's school board meeting calls for Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez to come up with a discipline policy to replace Chicago Police school resource officers by the end of June.
The resolution asks CPS officials to introduce a "holistic approach to school safety in lieu of a trained Chicago police school resource officer."
A number of schools have voted to remove resource officers in the wake of the George Floyd protests in 2020. If passed, the resolution would impact 39 high schools that still have school resource officers.
As a candidate for mayor, Brandon Johnson said police officers have no place in schools. CPS employees 1,400 hundred security guards at schools.
The board said it expects the district "will continue its strong partnership with the mayor's office and the Chicago Police Department, which have always, and will continue to, provide critical support for all our schools," according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
