(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Coming to work to supervise a $240 million renovation of the north wing of the state Capitol is quite a rush for Andrea Aggertt.
“It is a pretty overwhelming feeling to be in charge of such an historic renovation," Aggertt, director of the Office of the Architect of the Capitol, said during a recent tour of the job.
Why pump so much money into the Capitol, finished in 1888?
“This is really the Statehouse of the people of Illinois. So, this isn't just for the people who work here. But this is for every single visitor, every single resident of Illinois, something to be proud of,” she said. “We have one of the coolest Capitol buildings in the 50 states.”
Here are some of the timelines related to the work: the Senate is expected to occupy its chamber in January 2025; an underground conference center and new entrance are expected to be ready that August.
The new entrance is going to be underground as well.
