Resident dead, 80 others displaced in Calumet City condo fire
CALUMET CITY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - One person was killed and dozens of people were at least temporarily left without a place to live Monday night when fire struck a condo complex in Calumet City.
The fire was in a seven-story condo building at The Park of River Oaks Condos along 159th Street just east of the Bishop Ford expressway. The Calumet City Fire Department said a woman was found dead on the seventh floor. The department said that when firefighters arrived shortly after 7 p.m. there were heavy flames stretching from the second floor up to the seventh.
A resident named Shauneese told CBS-2 she was able to get out of the building by walking down the stairs.
"...Heart started racing because the embers from the flames were blowing. The wind was much higher than what it is now. The embers kept blowing and they actually started catching on to other units that were neighboring," Shauneese said.
A Calumet City spokesman said 80 were left homeless at least temporarily and that four residents and three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Cause of the fire is under investigation.
