CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Woodlawn and South Shore residents who are demanding the protection of housing around the site where the Obama Presidential Center is being built, brought a protest to Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
They marched in the street and chanted for a a Community Benefits Agreement for both neighborhoods.
"I'm dissapointed in my mayor. She made us a promise," said Woodlawn resident Mary Fitzpatrick.
"All I'm saying is Mayor Lightfoot, you need to stand up to your promises. Lightfoot, get on the right foot.
“The Rally on Wrightwood,” as protestors called the event, was an escalation of their campaign for affordable housing set-asides and other protections to prevent displacement.
Porsche Patrice, another Woodlawn resident, also expressed her frustration with the situation.
"When I considered the idea of my family being displaced by the very devleopements that are being sent to benefit our community, I get downright angry," she said.
Linda Jennings has lived in South Shore for 64 years.
"I watched over time as movers arrived- moving lifelong posessions to start over after 50 years in another neighborhood," she said.
People in the crowd responded by yelling "that ain't right."
The Woodlawn and South Shore residents, where the majority of housing is rental, said they’re seeing developers and investors coming in and rents going up.
