(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The city of Chicago could be weeks away from dropping its proof-of-vaccination requirement to enter restaurants and other indoor businesses if COVID cases continue to fall.

That would be welcome news to restaurant owners in Chicago.

Izzy Kharasch, President of Hospitality Works in Chicago, tells WBBM Newsradio that restaurant workers are put in the position of enforcing the mandate.

"My biggest concern has always been the safety of the frontline workers.  We've seen in numerous cities where someone forgetting their vaccine card has caused fights and injuries, and that part is really unacceptable," Kharasch said Monday.

He added that rescinding the mandate sends a powerful message.

"Pulling away that particular mandate says to everybody that things are getting better and it's safer to move about," Kharasch said.

The proof-of-vaccination requirement took effect on Jan. 3. There is no word on when it would be rescinded. The city’s health commissioner, Dr. Allison Arwady, has said health metrics will determine when that occurs but conceded it’s on the horizon.
