(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago's public health commissioner said the city may lift its vaccine requirement at some indoor gathering places sooner rather than later, but she can't say exactly when.
COVID metrics are looking much better, with the number of cases, positives tests, hospitalizations and deaths all dropping, Dr. Allison Arwady said Tuesday at a news briefing.
The numbers are still too high, she said, but the commissioner conceded it’s fair to ask when city government may lift its proof-of-vaccine requirement for patrons of restaurants, bars, gyms and entertainment venues.
Her answer: Soon, possibly.
“I want to be able to lift this. I want to be able to lift it though at a time that we’re confident it won’t lead to a major rebound or unnecessarily put more folks at risk,” she said.
Arwady would not commit to a timeline, stressing the metrics will determine any lifting of restrictions.
She credits the proof-of-vaccination requirement with influencing some people to get vaccinated. Vaccinations are the reason the metrics are going down, she said.
