Revisiting local past of 'The Unabomber'

EVERGREEN PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Ted Kaczynski, known as the “Unabomber,” who engaged in a notorious bombing spree from 1978 to 1995, killing three people and wounding two dozen, has died in federal prison at in North Carolina at the age of 81.

The man, who became a notorious murderer known worldwide, was from Chicago.

Kaczyinski was born in Chicago and his family later moved to southwest suburban Evergreen Park when he was in grade school.

According to various news profiles from several sources over the years, Kaczyinski was so smart he was able to skip sixth grade and began having social problems.

He graduated early from Evergreen Park Community High School and started at Harvard when he was just 16.

Many years later his brother David Kaczynski recognized elements of his brother’s writings in his manifesto, and contacted federal investigators.

David Kaczynski received a $1 million reward from the FBI for the Unabomber's capture. He told the Associated Press in 1998 he would give most of it to his brother's victims and their families.
