(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A south suburban high schooler, 18-year-old Nasir Bailey, has become the nation's top-ranked high school wrestler.

Bailey is a senior at Rich Township High School.

He was rated as the nation's top high school wrestler by the online wrestling site FloWrestling after he defeated the previous "number one" last weekend at a University of Michigan tournament.

Although Bailey lost twice before to that same wrestler, he said he was confident he would win their third match.

“Both of the previous matches I got the first takedown, so I think my biggest goal was to get the first takedown, get on the board first, and just keep putting it on him — keep scoring,” Bailey said. “Ultimately, I came out champion, so the game plan worked out good.”

Bailey said he always knew he would eventually get the top ranking.

“I always felt that I was the top dog. I feel like this is just another step in the process of ultimately becoming a national champion.

Bailey hopes to win that national collegiate championship with the University of Little Rock in Arkansas, where he’ll attend starting in 2023.

His other goal: to win a gold medal at the Olympics.
