CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of rideshare drivers and their supporters descended on the West Ridge office of 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein Monday afternoon, demanding her support for the proposed Rideshare Living Wage and Safety ordinance.
A protest outside the 50th Ward aldermanic office - and then protesters, led by Lori Simmons, asked aides to get their boss, Alderman Debra Silverstein, on the phone, which they did.
Simmons pushed Silverstein to commit to signing on as a co-sponsor of the Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance.
“We did meet and you said, ‘Call me next week and I’ll let you know what my concerns are if I have any or otherwise I’ll sign," she said.
“And then when I tried to contact you I couldn’t get you, so I don’t want that to happen again, for the sake of our drivers.”
“If you cannot reach me tomorrow then you can come back and picket in front of my office again," Silverstein replied.
Protesters were chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, Debra’s got to go.”
“I can tell you that by saying, ‘Hey hey ho ho Silverstein’s got to go’ is not really winning me over right now," Silverstein said in response.
The rideshare group of protesters agreed to check in again with Alderman Silverstein in a day. Simmons pushed Silverstein to commit to signing on as a co-sponsor of the Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance.
