Shootout halts North Side robbery attempt: CPD

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An overnight robbery attempt on the North Side escalated to a shootout.

According to Chicago Police, a 23-year-old man was walking in Edgewater near Winthrop and Balmoral shortly before 4:30 a.m. when two cars- a white sedan and dark-colored SUV-  pulled up alongside him. A male suspect exited one of the vehicles, approached the victim and then held him at gunpoint, demanding his property.

Police said it was at that point that the victim, who has a Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) and concealed carry license took out his gun.

Both exchanged gunfire.

The 23-year-old victim was not hurt, and the suspect went back to the SUV, giving up on the robbery attempt. Both the SUV and the sedan then fled southbound, police said.

It’s unclear if the suspect suffered gunshot wounds.

No one is in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.

The CPD reported two armed robberies that occurred earlier Tuesday morning on the North Side.

The first occurred around 3:40 a.m. when two armed men approached a 45-year-old man inside his car near Lunt and Hamilton and demanded his belongings, Chicago police said.

After the man complied, the robbers got into a silver SUV and drove away, police said.

About half an hour later, two gunmen exited two different cars near  Wolcott and Norwood and robbed a 29-year-old man sitting in his car, police said.

Police are investigating the possibility the three attacks are linked.
