ROBBINS, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Residents of an apartment building in Robbins are in day six without running water, but there’s hope it will be back on Wednesday.

At first, the village of Robbins shut off the water supply to five apartment buildings last Thursday, because landlord Marvin Wells was $137,000 behind in water bill payments.

Now, officials said Wells has put down payments on bills for four of the buildings and expects to do the same for building number five on 139th and Central Park Wednesday. Water in four of the five buildings has been restored, according to Mayor Darren Bryant.

Resident Donna Jenkins said that when the water was shut off last week, she quickly bought four cases of bottled water and that her family is in survival mode.

“Now, I’m back at buying four more cases and, not only buying the four cases of 40 count, I’m buying gallons so that I can fill the tank up to be able to flush the toilet."

Jenkins cleans homes for a living and hates being caught in the middle.

“Just imagine me coming from cleaning up these people’s homes and I have to come home and, you know, sanitize myself, wash my hands and, you know, get myself together from coming in from cleaning, you know, doing a labor job which causes me to sweat.”

Erica Chiang, a spokesman for the landlord, said Wells expects to have water meters installed on the buildings on October 1, so he’s charged by usage, not a flat rate.

Chiang also said landlord Marvin Wells plans to give tenants some kind of a discount on their rents for their inconvenience.
