(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A police station housing migrants on Chicago's Northwest side was closed for cleaning Thursday, because of a case of scabies.
The Department of Public Health said this is not an outbreak, but a single case of scabies at the 16th District station in the Jefferson Park neighborhood.
The affected individual in question is receiving treatment, and the station was reopened following a deep cleaning, according to the department.
All asylum seekers previously housed at the 16th District were moved to other shelters. Scabies is spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact with someone who is infested with the scabies mite, the department said.
Symptoms are intense itching where the mites burrow under the skin and and a pimple-like rash.
