CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was confusion on Chicago's South Side Friday, amid conflicting reports about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents being turned away from a school.

Officials with Chicago Public Schools claimed ICE agents were seen at Hamline Elementary School. Though a spokesperson for the agency denied such an encounter.

Now, the U.S. Secret Service is taking credit for the incident. A Secret Service spokesperson told WBBM special agents from the Chicago Field Office were investigating a threat made against an official who is under their protection.

The agents, spokesperson said, first went to a nearby home in the Back of the Yards neighborhood then stopped by Hamline Elementary. They identified themselves to the school principal and distributed business cards. The agents left without incident, the Secret Service said.

Here is their full statement to WBBM:

“On Friday special agents from the United States Secret Service Chicago Field Office were investigating a threat made against a government official we protect. In the course of their investigation, agents first visited a residence in a local neighborhood and then made a visit to Hamline Elementary School. Agents identified themselves to the school principal and provided business cards with their contact information. The agents left without incident. The Secret Service investigates all threats made against those we protect, we do not investigate nor enforce immigration laws.”

WBBM staff contributed to this report.
