CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An Illinois state senator accused of corruption is to appear in court today to enter a plea.

Senator Emil Jones III. is accused of taking a $5,000 bribe to help block legislation that would have been unfavorable to a red-light camera company. Jones has resigned from leadership positions in the state senate but not the actual $73,000 a year senator’s job.

Governor Pritzker said Jones should leave the senate altogether and that resigning only his leadership role falls short of what the public should expect. Jones was handed his senate seat by his father in 2009 when the senior Jones retired as senate president.

The governor’s Republican opponent in the November election, Senator Darren Bailey, asked on Twitter yesterday when Illinois will get serious about anti-corruption legislation.
