(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- To help more high school students in Illinois earn college credit, the state is awarding grants to ten school districts.
Jennifer Kirmes of the State Board of Education said many school districts in Illinois don't offer classes for Advanced Placement exams, which allow high school students to earn college credit.
She said other districts need help expanding their programs to meet the need.
The state is awarding a total of $1.5 million in grants to Chicago Public Schools, as well as nine suburban and downstate districts.
"To help them expand AP classes and offer them to more students, and also provide them with funds to get professional development and curriculum and other resources that help their teachers be even more effective," said Kirmes.
The suburban grants will go to District 204 in Joliet Township, District 111 in Kankakee, District 50 in Harvard, District 365-U in the southwest suburbs, District 227 in the south suburbs and District 200 in the northwest suburbs.
