CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As early voting for the 2022 midterm elections kicked off Monday, Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium opened the polls to their own special vote: It asked the public to name one of the aquarium’s newest sea otter pups.

Until 5 p.m. on Oct. 31, anyone can vote on one of three names for the pup currently known as Otter 929, who was one of two pups that arrived at the Shedd earlier this month after being found stranded in California.

While the Shedd’s animal care team will name the other pup, officials flipped the naming responsibility to the public for Otter 929, as they hoped it would help build “affinity and understanding around sea otters.”

The names for consideration are:

-Jade: named after Jade Cove, located in the southern area of Big Sur in California

-Sunny: named after Sunset Beach, which is next to California’s Asilomar Beach

-Willow: named after Willow Creek Picnic Area and Beach in Monterey County, Calif.

Cast your vote here. There is no limit to how many times a member of the public can vote.

The Shedd Aquarium will drop Otter 929’s official name on its social media accounts on Nov. 1.
