OTTAWA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office was called to an area northeast of Ottawa Saturday afternoon in regard to a skydiving accident.

Deputies found a person dead in a cornfield near Skydive Chicago, a company that describes itself as the Midwest’s premier skydiving facility.
It’s still unclear what led up to the accident and the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the victim’s name.

Last week, a group of 200 divers had attempted to set a world record for the largest head-first skydive at the Ottawa facility, though this weekend’s accident was unrelated.

A death investigation is being handled by the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and the FAA.

Skydive Chicago issued the following statement:

"It is with deep sadness to announce there was an incident with an experienced skydiver on Saturday August 27, 2022. The incident was not during the World Record Attempts nor was the skydiver a part of the World Record Attempts that were being completed the prior week. That being said, to respect the privacy of the family we are not releasing any names at this time. We are working with the appropriate authorities during their investigation. We have no further information at this time."
