SPRING GROVE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It’s a sign of spring!
Tulip bulbs are beginning to bloom at Richardson Farm in far northwest suburban Spring Grove. After planting roughly 300,000 bulbs last fall, this year’s third annual Tulip Festival could have as many as one million flowers in bloom.
“The colors out there in the field are just phenomenal,” said co-owner George Richardson. “There are hundreds of thousands of blossoms right now. The reds, the yellows and the two shades of purples, oh my gosh, it's just so, so pretty right now.”
After walking through six football fields worth of tulips, visitors will have a chance to take a bit of flora home.Each paid admission includes one free tulip plus the opportunity to buy additional flowers for $2 a piece.
Richardson expects to see as many as 100,000 visitors this year and that the fields will be open through at least May 7 and possibly through Mother’s Day weekend.
“It's looking like terrific tulip weather,” he said. “The temperatures are forecast to remain in the sixties with lows in the forties, which is just perfect tulip weather for longevity.”
Richardson Farm’s Tulip Festival also features food trucks, a gift shop and live music on the weekends.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the farm, located at 909 English Prairie Rd. in Spring Grove.
