Former NW Side Catholic school could potentially shelter up to 300 migrants, alder says

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A closed Catholic School in the Portage Park neighborhood could begin taking in migrants next month.

The former St. Bartholomew School on the 4900 block of West Addison Street would be the first vacant Archdiocese property to be used as a temporary shelter.

It could house about 300 people.

Thirtieth Ward Ald. Ruth Cruz told constituents that a community meeting will be scheduled in the upcoming weeks. She also said the shelter could open in mid-January.

I fully support this endeavor to save lives and to ease suffering of the refugee families who are facing the harshness of a Chicago winter.” wrote Our Lady of the Rosary Parish pastor Father Mike O’Connell, who oversees St. Bartholomew.

He asked that parishioners support it, as well.
