(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The state of Illinois is helping the city of Chicago and suburban Cook County provide cooling centers, as the extreme heat continues for another day.
Alicia Tate-Nadeau, director of the Illinois Department of Emergency Management said the concern is greatest in Chicago and suburban Cook County, which were hardest hit by power outages from Monday evening’s storm system. She said the state has opened extra cooling centers to help those who do not have access to air conditioning.
“With temperatures anywhere between 105, with heat index going up to 110 degrees, the focus really is on getting the electricity back and making sure that we can provide cooling to our most vulnerable populations that are out there,” Tate-Nadeau said.
“Chicago has a total of six (cooling centers), Cook County has 21, and the state, in general, has an additional six that have been sped up.”
Tate-Nadeau is also urging people to check on family, friends, and neighbors, who are seniors or have health conditions that make them more susceptible to extreme heat.
