CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – An Illinois state senator charged with corruption has quit Wednesday morning just before his lawyer indicated he’s changing his plea.
State Sen. Thomas Cullerton, a Democrat from Villa Park, was first elected to the state senate in 2012 and, according to the indictment against him, the very next year he took a job with the Teamsters Union in which he got paid but did not have to do any work.
Federal prosecutors alleged Cullerton was given $275,000 in pay and benefits over four years. Now, the 52-year-old state legislator has stepped down from his elected position and his attorney said Cullerton has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
He’ll change his plea to guilty in a couple of weeks.
