UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Striking faculty and staff from three Universities - Chicago State, Eastern and Governor’s State, have been picketing and rallying at Governor’s State Tuesday.

At the main entrance to Governor’s State, passing drivers were honking horns in support of those walking a picket line.

John Miller is the President of the University Professionals of Illinois.

"We're bringing everybody together to kind of show and highlight what's happening in higher ed in the state of Illinois. Higher Ed has been hurt. This union has not taken serious pay increases," he said.

"We've added extra work and of course, during the pandemic, we made that transition in a week. Some folks who've never taught online were suddenly were teaching online. We provided those faculty members with the support to learn how to do that and do it effectively and maintain."

Pay is a major issue.

"We have folks at some of these campuses that are barely making over minimum wage as a faculty member with a PhD or a M.A.," Miller said.
