CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County Health officials celebrated the opening of a new neurosciences intensive care unit at Stroger Hospital.
The new ICU will provide 24/7 care for neurological patients, such as those with acute strokes, brain hemorrhages, and traumatic brain or spinal cord injury.
Chief Medical Officer of Cook County Health Claudia Fegan said the new unit means doctors can provide better care to more patients.
“Our doctors now have a suite of new equipment and technology to provide top of the line care to our patients with the most complex neurological needs,” Fegan said.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said this new intensive care unit being at Stroger is especially important, as the Near West Side is home to many Black Chicagoans.
“African Americans are 50% more likely to have strokes as compared to their white adult counterparts,” Preckwinkle said. “Providing access to neurological care on the West Side is an essential step in advancing health equity in Cook County.”
