CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — More than 50 cases of COVID-19 have been reported at the University of Chicago this week, marking the biggest campus outbreak since the start of the school year.

According to a statement from the university, a “substantial number of cases are among students living on-campus, distributed across multiple residence halls.”

The cases are being traced to off-campus fraternity parties, and members of the university’s student government took to social media condemning the actions of their peers.

“It is difficult to put into words our disappointment about this situation,” College Council Representative Naa Ashley Ashitey said.

Ali Veinbachs, Co-Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee, said student leaders condemn the partygoers, who should know “full well the risks and dangers of doing so.”

Students living in residence halls must observe a new stay-at-home order until April 15. Classes will be conducted remotely, starting Thursday, for at least seven days.

“As a reminder, UChicago is not an island. We are part of a greater community,” Ashitey said.

The College Council drafted a resolution recommending the suspension of pre-registration privileges for students who violated the health pact by attending the parties.

It’s also asking administrators for academic leniency toward students disrupted by the campus closure.

According to the University of Chicago’s COVID dashboard, there have been 918 cases reported since the start of the academic year.
