CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) -- A top Cook County Health official warned Wednesday that a rise in COVID-19 cases could bring back tighter capacity limits and other measures for businesses and more.

Dr. Rachel Rubin, co-leader of the Cook County Department of Health, said the number of people testing positive for coronavirus is going up across the suburbs.

It’s prompting officials to think about tightening guidelines for indoor and outdoor gatherings, she said.

“We’re not taking such actions now — not yet,” she said.

Much of the rise in infections is among young adults.

Rubin said a rollback could be triggered by even more new cases and if hospital capacity is jeopardized.

She said she doesn’t believe the county would re-impose the strictest limits. The current 50% dining capacity in restaurants might dial back to 40%, for example.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Public Health on Wednesday reported 3,790 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus, including 28 additional deaths.
